The SALON of MUSIC and THEATER

Each year since 2001, I have generally produced and hosted one or two Salons of Music and Theater.  Until 2021, my Salons have been in people’s homes.  In the same evening you might have heard arias and art songs, Brazilian music, a comedy sketch, a short play by Tennessee Williams, musical theater, jazz, and improvisational music and stand-up comedy.

In 2021, because of Covid-19, I hosted my first Salon on Zoom.  It took place on Saturday evening, June 26.  We had a great live show that brought together people from  eight states and one Canadian province.

I hope the next salon will be in person!

THE PERFORMERS AT THE JUNE 26, 2021, SALON

Avi Wisnia, Blair Bodine, Lisa Joy Tuttle, Michelle Lewis, Sabrina Falls, Sharon Sigal, and Stevie and the Bluescasters.

AVI WISNIA

Award-winning singer/songwriter Avi Wisnia will preview songs from his forthcoming studio album, “Catching Leaves.” The recording artist finds inspiration in 1950’s west-coast jazz, acoustic American folk, Brazilian bossa nova, and contemporary piano pop. His clever lyrics give a knowing nod to his contemporaries, while his smooth vocals and deft piano skills assure you that this is truly something new. Avi Wisnia has performed in renowned venues around the world – from the Philadelphia Museum of Art to The Kennedy Center in Washington DC to concert tours in Japan, Poland, and Brazil. In addition to being a performing songwriter, Avi has given a TED Talk and performed with The Moth storytellers and currently runs the Philadelphia Songwriters Circle, hosting the monthly Songwriters Night concert series in Ardmore. For more information, visit his website.

BLAIR BODINE

Winner of the American Songwriter Magazine grand prize for lyric writing, Blair Bodine has been hailed as a “songbird with heart.” Her songs are rich in storytelling traditions, blending folk, soul and Americana genres. In 2019, Blair released her second album “Phoenix,” co-produced by Grammy award-winner Glenn Barrett. The album features 12 original songs recorded in Nashville and Philadelphia, Blair’s hometown. “In addition to writing and performing her original soul-stirring melodies, Bodine is passionate about music education. A Columbia University graduate, she wrote her thesis on Chinese Ethnomusicology… In other words, Bodine isn’t your cookie cutter singer-songwriter — a fact that has earned her some much-deserved recognition in competitions and festivals across the country.” -NewSong Music

MICHELLE LEWIS

Many performers live for applause. Michelle just wants to make you cry. As an artist, she lives for the paradox of the uplifting lament. Your tears flow for the strength of the bond not the pain of the fracture. This duality makes hers such a fascinating voice. More polished than folk and more personal than pop, singer/songwriter Michelle Lewis is performing her original songs for us from her home in Los Angeles, CA.  You can connect with Michelle through her website (where you can download music and buy CDs and merch), or on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.  If you want to be on her mailing list, email her at michelle@michellelewismusic.com.

STEVIE AND THE BLUESCASTERS

“Few but mighty, Stevie and the Bluescasters demonstrate without a doubt that there IS such a thing as an intimate powerhouse! Just (but not merely!) a trio, their brand of deep-fried acoustic blues will rock your soul. From Stevie Nolan’s gutsy-yet-sweet vocalizing to her backdoor man Paul Nolan’s inventive, driving guitar to Seth Holzman’s spine-tingling harmonica (both unamplified and green-bulleted), this is a blues band with a no-nonsense take-no-prisoners craftsmanship and bone-deep conviction. Whatever your ills, the Bluescasters are your miracle cure. Wellness is just a Wild-Ox Moan away!”

LISA JOY TUTTLE

Lisa Joy Tuttle is a professional coach, international trainer, and doctoral student by day. By night pre-pandemic, she was often out chasing her stand-up dreams at a local open mic or growing her theatrical skills. Lisa studied acting at the Lantern Theater, musical theater performance at the Walnut Street Theatre, and improv, stand-up, and sketch comedy at Philly Improv Theater. A native New Yorker, she had a blast performing Gilbert and Sullivan operettas with Manhattan’s famed Blue Hill Troupe. As an enthusiastic longtime attendee of Sharon’s Salons, Lisa is thrilled to be performing stand-up and sketch comedy at Sharon’s 29th Salon of Music and Theater!
